What is in this $0.99 preroll joint?

What is in this $0.99 pre-roll? It seems like such a great deal!

A common phrase we have all been taught since childhood is “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” A $0.99 preroll is no exception to that rule.

Most manufacturers will have you believe that they are putting “small nugs” in their prerolls. If this were true it would be fantastic, but it’s not. Small nugs or shake as in prerolls is an idea that has been strategically cultivated by the industry to deceive the average consumer into believing they are getting a high-end product at a substantial discount. Instead, companies are buying wholesale trim from various vendors and stuffing it into a joint or blunt.

What is trim?

When a cannabis plant is harvested, it goes through several manufacturing processes before it is ready for consumption. The plant is cut down, and the buds are clipped off branches. After they dry, the outer leaves will be trimmed - either by hand or machine. Trim has less than half of the THC content of an average bud from the same plant. After the buds are trimmed, a machine packs all these leaves and excess material into the prerolls and ships them to the store where you, the consumer, buy them. That’s what you are getting. Trim - not nugs. It’s simply market economics. High quality product is expensive, so if your joint is cheap, it’s because what went into it was cheap.

This begs the question: Is trim safe to smoke?

Yes. You can smoke any part of the plant above the soil, but it might not taste good or get you very high. If you smoke a joint that is extremely cheap and tastes harsh, it is probably because you are smoking the packed trim. More on harshness in my next article.
